C-Block has made it big in their home-city
of Changsha - the capital of
Hunan province - and
is steadily growing a China-wide fan base. Their
heavy Changsha
accent (the C in C-Block stands for Changsha), and
references
to local culture make it difficult for many Chinese people to
really
"get" what their songs are about. Their publicity company has
embarked
on a concerted effort though to pitch them to a much wider
community.
This promo video, featuring the song "hakula (sic) matata", appears
today (16 October) as a "paid for" ad on one of the biggest web
portals
in China. As well several lines of standard mandarin
and Chinese subtitles,
the song also has a few English lines
(not to mention a title that was made
famous by the Disney film,
the Lion King). At least their English and Swahili
are comprehensible.
